Linde LLC will detail the positive effect of using helium and helium/argon mixtures in selective laser melting during the RAPID + TCT 2017 conference.

Bridgewater, N.J., U.S., April 26, 2017 – During RAPID + TCT 2017, Linde LLC will detail the positive effect of using helium and helium/argon mixtures on parts produced from high-performance titanium (Ti) alloy or nickel super alloy by selective laser melting, a 3D printing process for metals.

The conference and expo, May 8-11 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is North America’s preeminent event for discovery, innovation and networking in additive manufacturing.

Linde is a global leader in the production of industrial gases for additive manufacturing processes, metal heat treatment and powder metallurgy. The presentation is scheduled as follows:

Thursday, May 11, 10:45 a.m.
“How Helium Improves Additive Manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V and IN718 Parts”

Grzegorz Moroz, Program Manager, Heat Treatment & Atmospheres, Linde LLC, will outline the results of two studies on the influence of helium and helium/argon mixtures as shielding gases on Ti-6Al-4V and IN718 alloy parts produced by selective laser melting. In additive manufacturing processes based on powder bed fusion, the production chamber is commonly filled with inert gases so that oxidation of metal is prevented during melting. Argon or nitrogen are traditionally used to inert the chamber.

Ti-6Al-4 is a high-performance titanium alloy widely used to produce such parts as: hand tools, sporting equipment, medical and dental implants, and military and aircraft components, including turbine blades, discs and rings. IN718 is a high-strength nickel super alloy used to produce such parts as: gas turbine engine parts, liquid fuel rocket motor components, cryogenic tanks, springs and fasteners.

Linde LLC offers a portfolio of solutions for the ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy industries, ranging from gases and equipment to services and process consulting for additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, combustion, heat treatment and cooling.
