Global Cybersecurity 2025: 54% of large organizations identify supply chain interdependencies as the greatest barrier to cyber resilience.

As security experts Patrick Gilman and Jonathan Freimann point out in the recent Industry Today article, National Security—An Imperative for Manufacturers, “As global threats evolve and regulatory requirements intensify, national security has pivoted from a purely governmental responsibility to a shared responsibility extending to all industries, regardless of whether their operations are primarily domestic or international. Navigating this new landscape is not without its challenges.”

Indeed, The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025 report released this week highlights the increasing complexity of the cyber landscape due to rapidly emerging technologies and associated threats, geopolitical uncertainties, regulatory challenges, and vulnerabilities in supply chain interdependencies, all of which is made worse by the growing cyber skills gap needed for  organizations protect themselves.  The report notes that the cyber skills gap increased by 8% in 2024, with two in three organizations lacking essential talent and skills to meet their security requirements; only 14% of organizations report confidence in having adequate people and skills they need to protect against cyber attack.

Also according to the report, one in three CEOs cite cyber espionage as their top concern. In the view of the report’s authors, there is a need for a fundamental shift in recognizing that cyber security is a critical investment, not a mere operating expense. What’s required is a shift in perspective to enhanced cyber resilience, meaning an organization’s ability to mitigate the impact of significant cyber incidents on its goals and objectives.  Of additional importance is to evaluate cyber risks from a socioeconomic perspective, allowing organizations to effectively allocate resources and strengthen their resilience against cyber threats.
