Key considerations before expanding your small business to ensure success.

Starting off as nothing more than an idea, you managed to develop a product or service, cultivate an authentic team, identify and market to a target audience, and generate sales that consistently meet or exceed your financial goals. It’s safe to say, that you’ve worked hard to get your business to where it is today. It’s only natural at this point to consider taking things to the next level to expand your reach and success.

Though expanding your small business can be quite the milestone, it is not an easy process. Much like when you started your company, there will be a lot of challenges to overcome in order to remain successful. Jumping the gun too soon could ruin everything you’ve worked so hard for. As such, before taking that leap of faith, it is highly recommended that you give thought to a few key considerations:

Readiness

Wanting to expand your small business and being ready to expand your small business are two very different things. If you expand before you’re actually ready, you place a lot of financial and operational pressures on yourself and your team unnecessarily.

How do you know when you’re ready to expand your business? Do you have a consistent list of regular customers? Are you gaining new customers regularly? Are your customers asking about new products, services, or service locations? Is your business’s net income (after expenses) consistent or growing? Is your industry flourishing right now, or is it fading or stagnated? Lastly, are you bringing in more business or getting more business requests than your existing operations can handle?

If you’ve answered yes to each of these questions, chances are you’re ready to expand your business.

Funding

So, you’ve done the research and the numbers and statistics show that you could very well benefit from expanding your small business. The next factor to consider is funding. Expanding your business means investing more money. If you don’t have the financial means or aren’t in a position to obtain the funding you’ll need for an expansion, you shouldn’t make moves just yet.

Start by creating a list of everything you’ll need to expand your business. Then, get a general idea of how much these items will cost. Compare this list of expenses to your current finances. Do you have enough to manage the additional costs? If not, you’ll need to look into other funding sources.

For example, if you were looking for a new location for your manufacturing warehouse or retail shop, there are hard money lenders Orange County and other counties across the US you could rely on to secure a commercial property loan. If you needed additional funds to purchase equipment and supplies, there are equipment loans available. Perhaps you need money to invest in inventory or marketing, then a small business loan may suffice.

In any of these examples, however, you must be in the right position financially to take advantage of these loans. This includes having good business credit, a strong track record (most borrowers ask to review financial reports to discern your company’s success and liability risks), and the financial means to repay these loans in full to avoid going into debt, ruining company credit, and perhaps destroying your brand.

Current Market

You believe you’re ready to expand your small business and you have the money (or are in a position to borrow and repay the funds) to fund your expansion. The final consideration to keep in mind is the current market. Just as you took the time to research the market and your target audience when you started your business, the same needs to be done when considering a business expansion.

If you’re thinking of offering a new product or service, will there be enough interest in it to be successful? Who will be your target audience? Will you be able to meet their demands? Are there competitors in this market you’ll have to worry about? For those who are expanding to a new geographical location, you want to know the answers to questions like, is there a need or interest for what you offer (to generate profits), is there already a lot of competition in the area, what are the expectations of consumers in that area, and do you have a marketing plan to draw in new audiences?

Expansions are great for business. It is essentially an opportunity to reach new customers, introduce new products and services, and increase revenue. Be that as it may, expanding before giving some serious thought to the above-mentioned factors could ruin your expansion dreams and your small business altogether. So, do your due diligence to ensure that you’re fully prepared to take your brand to the next level and succeed.

4 Alternative Therapies and Treatments for Cancer
