Calculation Phase

To make your safe relocation, well… safe, you need to create a list of items you need to move to the apartment. This will ensure that you don’t leave anything important behind, as well as it will allow you to prioritize things you want to move first.

Also, after you are done packing tricky items, it is important that you label them. The last thing you want is your box, full of glass, wobbling from corner to corner inside the truck.

Update Phase

You’ve packed your items, you’re sitting in your old apartment empty, which means that it is time you update all your subscriptions, mailing details, among other things. Don’t know where to start? Too much at hand? We suggest that you start by updating your driver’s license as this is something you’ll be needing in the near future. Second, you need to update your voter registration info, even though the election just recently ended.

After you updated your voting registration info, it is time you re-evaluate some of the services you use. See how often you are using your cable service provider, what utilities can be substituted, etc. Do your research, see what providers offer in your new area, and what are your migration options. If you need a moving permit, now’s the time to get it.

Last but not least, it would be nice to get your security deposit back. Typically, the transfer process takes somewhere between 14 to 60 days. However, extend this time-frame if you feel like you have disputes with the landlord.

Final Touches

Alright, the boxes are ready, services updated, time to say goodbyes, and run the last errands. Take back your clothes from the dry cleaner, cancel your yoga membership, and return those library books as you won’t be needing them. Additionally, you might also need to get some medicine, so do that as well.

Next, and depending on the situation it can be a tearjerker, you’ll have to kiss goodbye your neighbors. Ask them for a dinner, spend some quality time, and leave them your new address so they can send you some holiday cards.

On Your New Place

Congrats, you’ve made it to your new home. It has been a long journey and you are probably tired but don’t open that campaign bottle just yet as it is time for the unpacking phase. First things first, remove the fragile stuff and place it somewhere safe. Next, make sure that at least some utilities are working. Lastly, time to make some new friends, go meet your new neighbors and don’t forget to bring a treat.
