December 4, 2020 Your Best Guide for Safe Relocations

Relocation can be a tedious process especially if done haphazardly. However, our beginner’s guide will surely alleviate some of the stress.

Relocation can a tough process. You need to take into consideration every tiny detail so you don’t end up between a rock and a hard place later. It is stressful, especially if you aren’t going to use a full-service moving company.

However, what if we told you that isn’t always the case. Approaching the relocation process with the right mindset and the right prep work will make your transition much easier. To prove this, we create a noob list of activities you need to do to make your relocation a breeze. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s not waste any time and dive right into things.

Calculation Phase

To make your safe relocation, well… safe, you need to create a list of items you need to move to the apartment. This will ensure that you don’t leave anything important behind, as well as it will allow you to prioritize things you want to move first.

Now there are two ways about this, you can create a folder on your computer or phone where you can store photos of items you want to transfer, or you can be old fashioned about it and do it on paper. Either way, you need to have one but in case you are using your phone or PC, you can download a template on the Internet to speed things up.

Once you’ve filled your list with stuff you need to move, it is time to crunch some numbers. Namely, count how much it will cost you to relocate all of your belongings. Take note of every piece that’ll go into the truck. The reason why you want to do this is that it will make things easier for the moving company, as well as it will allow you to calculate how much the insurance will cost you. Finally, you need to identify what kind of budget you have and what might require additional expense.

Packing Phase

Now before we start talking about the actual packing phase, we must first settle on a schedule. If you plan on doing a single-truck move, then make sure you have enough time to pack things in advance. If you want to move stuff gradually, box-by-box, remember that life still happens and things can interfere. After you managed to figure this out, it is time you start packing those boxes.

Picking-up boxes

Now before you start buying boxes, it would be reasonable to search for existing boxes. See if you have old packaging for electronics, glass, etc. Often, original packaging is better than a newly-purchased replacement box as it comes with the appropriate filling and size. However, if you value space above all else and throw away the original packaging, then refer to the list you’ve made earlier and see how many different-sized boxes you need.

Packing up boxes

What better way to pack your stuff than by looking at how you’ve unpacked them in the first place. That’s right, not all items are packed equally, and often, fragile things require extra work, so don’t be frustrated if you end-up securing a single package all evening. Also, after you are done packing tricky items, it is important that you label them. The last thing you want is your box, full of glass, wobbling from corner to corner inside the truck.

Update Phase

You’ve packed your items, you’re sitting in your old apartment empty, which means that it is time you update all your subscriptions, mailing details, among other things. Don’t know where to start? Too much at hand? We suggest that you start by updating your driver’s license as this is something you’ll be needing in the near future. Second, you need to update your voter registration info, even though the election just recently ended.

After you updated your voting registration info, it is time you re-evaluate some of the services you use. See how often you are using your cable service provider, what utilities can be substituted, etc. Do your research, see what providers offer in your new area, and what are your migration options. If you need a moving permit, now’s the time to get it.

Last but not least, it would be nice to get your security deposit back. Typically, the transfer process takes somewhere between 14 to 60 days. However, extend this time-frame if you feel like you have disputes with the landlord.

Final Touches

Alright, the boxes are ready, services updated, time to say goodbyes, and run the last errands. Take back your clothes from the dry cleaner, cancel your yoga membership, and return those library books as you won’t be needing them. Additionally, you might also need to get some medicine, so do that as well.

Next, and depending on the situation it can be a tearjerker, you’ll have to kiss goodbye your neighbors. Ask them for a dinner, spend some quality time, and leave them your new address so they can send you some holiday cards.

On Your New Place

Congrats, you’ve made it to your new home. It has been a long journey and you are probably tired but don’t open that campaign bottle just yet as it is time for the unpacking phase. First things first, remove the fragile stuff and place it somewhere safe. Next, make sure that at least some utilities are working. Lastly, time to make some new friends, go meet your new neighbors and don’t forget to bring a treat.

And there you have it. Moving to a new place is never a nice experience due to the accompanying stress but if you approach it with the right mindset and do a little bit of preparation work, we are almost certain that it will be at very least, tolerable.
