June 22, 2022 RHI Magnesita Discloses CO2 Footprints for All Products

Leading global refractory company discloses CO2 footprints for all products – an important milestone towards a green transformation.

YORK, UNITED STATES – RHI Magnesita, the leading global supplier of refractory products, systems, and solutions, is proud to announce the company will disclose transparent and comparable CO2 footprints for each of its approximately 200,000 products, emphasizing its commitment to taking responsibility for a sustainable future.

“As a company, we are driven to providing innovative, sustainable solutions. Transparency with CO2 footprints is a new standard in the industry – we’re proud that when our customers are looking to make sustainable business decisions, they’ll easily find the impact of our refractories on their overall CO2 profile. Here in North America, our research and development (R&D) and recycling teams partner closely together to ensure our customers have the choice to select a CO2-reduced product while maintaining the quality and performance they need,” states Craig Powell, RHI Magnesita’s Regional President, North America.

Disclosing all greenhouse gases from “cradle-to-gate”

All of RHI Magnesita’s technical data sheets now include an “Environmental Indicators” field, in which the CO2-equivalent emission of one metric ton of the product is listed. The calculation method for these indicators is developed with, and supervised ongoingly by, external experts under the principles of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. All greenhouse gases “cradle-to-gate,” from raw material extraction to production to packaging to gate, are considered in these CO2 footprint calculations.

“This project marks an important milestone towards a green transformation. One of RHI Magnesita’s main targets is to significantly reduce emissions over the next few decades, with the long-term goal of achieving net-zero operations in all areas of the company. It is clear that a solid basis for sustainable decisions and developments can only be achieved by creating a valid, audited database,” Gustavo Franco, RHI Magnesita’s Chief Sales Officer, explains.
