The use of mineral sunscreen products has risen for several years. Current creams and lotions, however, often feel greasy, have a tacky end feel, and leave a white cast behind−especially on darker skin tones. To capture market share and increase your products marketability, it is crucial that today’s sunscreens must have more desirable aesthetics while being transparent enough to minimize any whitening effect on the skin−all while offering high SPF with broad spectrum protection.

To address these increasing consumer demands, Shin-Etsu Silicones of America, Inc. (SESA: A U.S. subsidiary of Shin- Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd., Japan) recently showcased their advanced sunscreen formulations at The Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetics Chemists 2023 Sunscreen Symposium™ (September 13–15) at Disney’s Yacht Club (Lake Buena Vista, FL). A pioneer in the field of silicones for personal care products, SESA provided cosmetic industry professionals with key insights into their latest sunscreen formulation advancements including:

SESA SUNSCREEN FORMULATIONS: SPD-Z7L, SPD-T5L, KF-6106, and KSG-320 SERIES

SPD-Z7L:
Fine Particle Zinc Oxide Dispersion
INCI: Zinc Oxide / Dimethicone / Polyglyceryl-3
Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone
Triethoxycaprylylsilane

SPD-T5L:
Fine Particle TiO2 Dispersion
INCI: Dimethicone / Titanium Dioxide (&)
Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone
Aluminum Hydroxide / Stearic Acid

SESA’s SPD Series are highly concentrated dispersions of fine particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in a volatile silicone oil (DMF-2cs Dimethicone). These products are essentially non-whitening, with a silky light skin feel. These dispersions are stabilized by a proprietary branched silicone-polyglycerin copolymer dispersant that gives the dispersions a high active content with low product viscosity. Both dispersions can be easily formulated into various formats allowing for the development of mineral sunscreens with minimal to no whitening, high SPF with reduced active content and are aesthetically pleasing.

The SPD Zinc Oxide and TiO2 surface dispersant treatments are also globally compliant with no restrictions−being FDA and GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) approved under sections 201(s) and 409 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Ultimately, given the increase in mineral sunscreens, the SPD Series offers a safe, easy, effective, and environmentally friendly formulation platform with high SPF.

KF-6106:
Polyglycerin-Modified Silicone
INCI: Polyglyceryl-3/Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone

SESA’s KF-6106 is a polyglycerin-modified, branched silicone surfactant with outstanding powder dispersability. Its superior absorption properties to the pigment surface makes this material an excellent dispersant. The unique structure helps break down the metal oxide agglomerates to allow for high active content, higher SPF and reduced whitening effect for mineral sunscreen formulations. The dispersant also effectively reduces the density of the metal oxides thereby enhancing the suspension stability.

Because of the function of their branched silicone structures, it greatly improves the dispersion of powder in silicone fluids and other oils. By promoting consistent and uniform dispersion of powders, it can greatly improve the stability and transparency of the final preparation−helping to minimize whitening, produce a good aesthetic feel, and high SPF.

SESA’s KF-6106 are functional materials that make it easier to combine powders into products for applications including sunscreen, liquid make-up, and lipstick.

KSG-320:
Emulsifying Silicone Elastomer
INCI: Isododecane/PEG-15/Lauryl Dimethicone Crosspolymer

SESA’s KSG-320 is an alkyl functionalized silicone cross-linked with polyether and swollen in Isododecane. This product is a self-emulsifying silicone elastomer with exceptionally silky, smooth skin feel with high degree of optical blurring. The chemistry is optimized to stabilize water-in-silicone, water-in-oil, and hybrid oil emulsions. It can also be used in organic rich anhydrous systems to thicken and improve sensory. It also provides improved organic ingredient compatibility versus traditional silicone elastomer gels.

Used for chemical sunscreens, it has the ability to create crystal clear sunscreens with organic UV filters− very rare for an elastomer gel. Overall, this material is designed to be versatile, easy to use, and capable of creating products with a wide variety of textures and emollient choice. It also features good compatibility with organic oils and esters.
