December 10, 2019 Four Reasons to Delegate at Work

Do you own a business or manage a team? If so, you could benefit from delegation. Here are four important reasons to delegate tasks at work.

December 10, 2019

Delegation is an essential management skill that every business owner should possess – but sadly many business owners struggle with delegating tasks. This can happen for a few reasons; some business owners are certain that they know best, so they hate the idea of assigning tasks to less knowledgeable people. Other business owners worry about overloading employees with too many tasks, so they prefer to do the bulk of the work themselves.

Can you relate to this? If so, you should consider learning more about the benefits of delegation. After all, one person can’t be responsible for everything – and if they are, it is likely that they will experience burnout sooner or later.

Here are four reasons to delegate tasks at work.

More Time For You

If you are a business owner, a CEO, or a manager it is very likely that you could benefit from delegating tasks to other people. This can be difficult, especially if you like to feel in control, but it is important to value your time. For instance, if you run the company, you shouldn’t spend your time doing menial admin tasks, as this means that you will have less time for more important tasks (such as managing employees and growing the company).

And this doesn’t just benefit the business; it can also benefit you. Many managers feel overworked and stressed when work gets busy, and over time this can cause burnout – but you can avoid this by delegating tasks so that you have a more reasonable workload.

And it doesn’t matter what industry you work in, as there are thousands of support tools designed for lots of different jobs. For instance, if you complete home inspections, you can use an ISN to help you complete inspections quickly.

Less Time Spent Micromanaging

Some managers think that micromanaging is an important part of their job, but in reality this is rarely the case. Of course it is essential to oversee certain procedures and protocols, but when it comes to standard work most employees hate the feeling of their boss standing over them while they work (which is entirely understandable).

Thankfully, it is possible to reduce micromanaging with support tools. For instance, you can download time trackers to ensure that employees are completing tasks quickly and efficiently, so you won’t need to keep checking up on them while they work. The feeling of trust can also help to improve the employer/employee relationship, so employees are more likely to feel happy and motivated at work.

Great Employees Can Shine

Delegating tasks will also make it easier for you to work out which employees are passionate about their job. This is a very important part of running a business; after all, if you want the business to continue to grow, you should focus your attention on the employees who really care about the company.

Sure, it might be easier to complete small tasks yourself, but if you delegate the work to others you will help to develop their skill-set. This means that in a few years, your employees will be more knowledgeable and efficient, which helps to ensure that the business continues to run smoothly.

Delegating tasks will also teach you more about the employees who aren’t interested in developing their skills or being promoted. This can be very useful; after all, promoting someone who doesn’t care about the business can have a negative effect on other employees and overall sales, which is never a good thing.

It Isn’t Your Job

Finally, it is important to remember that not every task is yours to complete; if that was the case, you wouldn’t need to hire employees. Some managers can struggle with delegating jobs that they used to do in the past, but if you have a new role you should be focusing on that. It can be a little annoying, especially if you know how to do the job well, but remember that other people deserve the chance to shine, too.

Delegation may seem like an unpleasant task, especially if you started the business yourself and put in most of the leg work – but in reality, refusing to delegate could stop your business from growing. Sometimes, it is essential to step back from certain tasks, as this means you can focus on more important things.
