Here are some tips on how to help improve the quality of life in the workplace.

improve quality of life in the workplace

While the quality of life in a workplace can’t be measured by a single variable, across the board for all employees, there are certain aspects of workplace life that can create an overall better quality of life.

One way to ensure that your employees are happy in the workplace is to check on them and ask for their feedback, as well as develop relationships with them, such that they’d feel comfortable bringing any potential issues to your attention.

Here are some tips to help improve the quality of life in the workplace:

Hire Employees With Good Attitudes

The people in the workplace play a huge role in how effective an environment it is. One way to promote a high-quality workplace is to fill it with employees who have good attitudes. This could mean hiring people who inspire teamwork and healthy interactions.

Employers who put personality and attitude of their employees higher than their skills tend to have healthier workplaces because while skills can be taught and experience can be gained, mindsets and work habits are tougher to mold. If you employ those who already have the said characteristics, you’re better off than companies that don’t take personality into account as much.

Ensure Safety In The Workplace

Having employees who feel safe in is key to providing a high quality of life within the workplace. Providing safety in the workplace can fall into two different categories: safety in a physical sense and safety in an emotional sense.

For example, making a physically safe environment would include the following aspects:

  • Following OSHA regulations
  • Making sure equipment is up to date
  • Following building codes
  • Doing proper air quality testing
  • Checking for mold

On the one hand, ensuring emotional safety among employees could mean:

  • Celebrating your team’s accomplishments
  • Trusting your team
  • Setting boundaries and expectations together
  • Creating open dialog between you and your team

Both of these types of safety play a key role in improving the quality of life within the workplace. While physical safety protects you, as an employer, legally, ‘emotional’ safety can create a work environment wherein employees are happy, which should be an important aspect of running a business.

Enhance Support For Employees

Enhancing organization within the workplace is a simple way to ease an employee’s worries and, therefore, enhance their daily quality of life within the workplace. Incorporating benefits into your work environment is key as well, such as providing:

  • Day care services
  • Flexible hours
  • Option to work from home
  • Bonuses

All of these benefits can improve the work environment, enough to inspire employees to concentrate more on their work and provide a higher quality of work because they feel they are not only being compensated, but are also being rewarded for the work they do bring to the table.

Beyond benefits, having a team that enforces policies regarding bullying or harassment can also be a great tool to build trust between boss and employees. With added trust, quality of life in the workplace is improved drastically.

Focus On Office Comfort

Comfort in an office an environment is often overlooked, but it shouldn’t be. Small improvements, such as those focusing on lighting, temperature, cubicle arrangements, cleanliness, amenities, or music choice, all play a role in creating a better quality of life in the workplace.

Discomfort can be a huge cause of distraction among employees who crave a different kind of atmosphere than the one that is provided to them. Employees who feel safe, secure, and comfortable are going to create a conducive work environment.

Pay Attention To Personal Health

It may not seem like the personal health of employees should be a concern of employers, but similar to employees’ comfort, their health can also play a huge role in the overall quality of the workplace. An employee who’s in a work environment that supports nutrition, stress relief, or group fitness is going to have a greater work ethic.

Allowing people to get up and move around during the day, whether that be a walk outside the building or just from one floor to another for a meeting, can encourage healthier living among employees. This goes for vending machines and food availability as well—removing junk food, and instead providing fresh and healthy food alternatives, can drastically improve the quality of a work environment.

Conclusion

Both employers and employees can have a major effect on the quality of life within the workplace. For employers, they should provide a friendly, safe, and comfortable environment wherein employees feel heard and cared for. In return, employees will bring attitudes and work ethics that further promote a healthy and productive work environment.
