July 31, 2020 How Long Do Headlight Bulbs Last?

Learn how to select the right replacement headlights and how to replace a headlight in a vehicle.

The lifespan of the headlights in a vehicle depends on the type of bulb and assembly. Halogen headlights are the most common and can last anywhere from 450 to 1,000 hours. High intensity discharge headlights last 2,000 hours up to 10,000 hours, depending on the design. LED bulbs can burn as long as 40,000 hours before requiring replacement. Learn how to select the right replacement headlights when shopping for auto parts online and find out how to replace a headlight in a vehicle.

Why Shopping for Auto Parts Online Can Save You Money

Shopping for parts online gives you an opportunity to compare a full range of options. Consider the benefits of ordering and installing original equipment manufacturer or aftermarket parts. You can also look for the best deal on any type of replacement headlight bulbs or assemblies.

Shopping online also makes it more affordable to get the supplies necessary to upgrade from halogen headlights to another headlight bulb type. You may prefer to simply purchase bulbs of a higher quality for the same headlight assemblies or switch out halogen headlights for more efficient lights.

If your vehicle is stock and not customized, online auto parts retailers make it possible to enter the specifications and narrow down the full inventory to parts that fit your vehicle, including replacement headlight bulbs or assemblies. This approach to ordering replacement parts can save money and time by helping you select components that fit your vehicle.

How to Correctly Install a Headlight Bulb

Installing headlight bulbs in most vehicles manufactured since the 1990s is not difficult. Many models feature a capsule system compatible with replaceable bulbs. Open the hood of your vehicle to access the headlight assemblies. You may need to remove a protective shield from the back of each assembly in order to gain access to the plastic harness that holds and powers the bulb. Remove the clip that holds the bulb in place and insert a replacement bulb of the same type.

Sealed beam headlights require the removal and replacement of headlight assemblies. You will need to remove frames, mounting screws and plates that hold the headlight in place. Remove the headlight and unplug the wiring socket. Plug wiring into the new assembly and reinstall. It may be necessary to adjust the alignment by loosening or tightening aiming screws.

If you drive frequently in low-light conditions, you may prefer to upgrade from halogen lights to HID, Xenon or LED headlights. This upgrade may range in difficulty depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the kits available. In some cases, this upgrade should be performed by a trained mechanic familiar with electrical systems and safety standards for road visibility.

Check the owner’s manual of a vehicle with stock headlights to make sure that any component you are considering has the right part number or fitment.  Although drivers often do not realize that a headlight requires replacement until it has burned out, it is ideal to change the bulbs or replace a sealed beam assembly as light brightness and quality diminish.
