A potential customer was seeking to evaluate the efficiency of UltraFlex induction heaters for soldering a bourdon pipe to a brass body and cap. The customer wanted to achieve a heating cycle of less than 6-8 seconds per joint while ensuring reliable solder flow and high-quality joints, without overheating the bourdon pipe.
To achieve this goal, UltraFlex engineers recommended the use of a 12kW induction heater from the UltraFlex SOLO series. The UltraFlex SOLO induction systems feature a unique Direct Digital Step™ control algorithm and are a breakthrough innovation in induction heating technology. They use the latest SiC MOSFET transistor technology and patented digital control algorithms, ensuring optimal performance and maximum efficiency in a wide frequency range – from 3 kHz to 400 kHz.
Several tests were conducted to identify the best induction heating setup and parameters for this heating scenario, achieving heat cycle times of 4.7 and 8 seconds for different sized parts. The tests confirmed that the use of a C-shaped induction coil and fixtures ensuring the proper positioning of the pipe inside the coil would guarantee a smooth and efficient induction soldering process that could be transferred to the production line.
The customer was convinced that by using induction soldering, they would achieve an energy-efficient and repeatable soldering process with consistent, high-quality results, regardless of the operator’s skills. This would increase productivity while also ensuring a completely green and environmentally-safe process, due to the lack of open flame, fumes or noxious emissions.
