The company, which is a leading manufacturer of digitally controlled induction heaters, had been contacted by a potential customer manufacturing electrical components. The manufacturer was looking to evaluate the replacement of their existing induction heating system with an UltraFlex induction heater and achieve higher productivity for their heating process.

The process of degassing vacuum tube elements is done by inserting a reactive metal – getter – into a sealed vacuum system. By heating the system on the outside to a target temperature of 900°C, the getter reacts with the remaining molecules in the vacuum system and absorbs them.

The customer was looking at increasing the productivity rate for this heating process and hence, was looking to achieve a heat cycle of 5 to 10 seconds per unit.

UltraFlex engineers recommended the use of an induction heater system from the UltraFlex UltraHeat W Series. UltraHeat W are advanced, cost-effective 5-15 kW Induction Heating systems utilizing the latest switching power supply technology. They feature adaptive digital phase control providing very efficient operation in a wide frequency range.

At 4.8 kW of power, it took less than 10 seconds for the UltraFlex induction heater to achieve the target heating temperature for the vacuum system. The heating process was successfully accomplished, with full control on the time, temperature and frequency used. Thanks to the improved timing and energy efficiency for this induction heating process, the customer would achieve better productivity rates while at the same time benefiting from reduced energy consumption. The heating process could also be easily automated and transferred on the production line, producing consistent results every time, regardless of the skills of the operator and ensuring complete safety of the working place.
